Good way to learn about wall street, November 2, 2004

As a homeschooling parent, I am always looking for effective ways to introduce complex
subjects to my children. Wall Street Spin does a wonderful job of exposing investment
terminology (through the Bull and Bear cards), showing cause and effect (Booms, Crashes,
IPOs and Hostile Takeovers) and even the speculative nature of the market (Day Trading). We
have played this game so much, that the kids have mastered their own unique investment
styles! (My daughter is conservative and only invests in the "Blue Chip" stocks, while my
oldest son loves to wheel and deal.)
Game play is open-ended. If we have the 90-minute limit, everyone knows to play more
aggressively, to see who can create the most wealth. When we play until one player is
bankrupt, the strategies are actually quite deep - selling and trading stocks, "bullying" each
other into lucrative trades - GREAT FUN!
Like all good games, Wall Street Spin is fun to modify. We've created advanced rules that I
hope will further my children's understanding of, and appreciation for the stock market.
If you are a homeschooling parent, or if you just want your children to learn something about
investing in the stock market (without boring them to tears), you should consider Wall Street
Spin. |
